  About Us

The need for synergy and jointness was highlighted as a common theme by the Group of Ministers that debated on issues seeking corrections post 'Operation Vijay'. The Kargil conflict brought to fore the absence of the ‘Joint Warfare Profession’ in the forces and MoD officials. It also highlighted the need to create Joint HQ and promote Jointness in policy formulation, defence acquisition, procedures and decision-making process in the Security of the Nation. The need for establishment of a think tank was highlighted in the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee. It necessitated setting up of the Centre of Joint Warfare Studies by the Ministry of Defence. In pursuance to GoM Report, the Govt accorded sanction for the establishment for Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS). The Centre was established at Kashmir House Complex under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff on 27 Aug 2007. CENJOWS was inaugurated by Gen JJ Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC Chairman Chief of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff on 27 Aug 2007. The CENJOWS was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of XXI, 1860 on 04 Oct 2007.

CENJOWS is mandated to promote Jointmanship as a synergetic enabler of the National Power construct and to focus on all its dimensions in the comprehensive Security domain. The centre will focus on all aspects of Jointmanship through studies, research and debate to align the Services and enablers of National Power towards challenges of the future and contextual realities.
